I don’t remember when, but I added the DVD “The Devil and Daniel Johnston” to my Blockbuster online queue after I saw a preview for it. I knew it was a film I just had to see. I had forgotten about it and two weeks ago it just showed up in the mail. With my busy schedule I finally found some time tonight to take a break from editing to see it.

Back when I was a student at UT, I had seen a wall on the Drag with a funny looking frog that greets “Hi, how are you” every time I saw it. I never paid much attention to it other than that it’s just another one of those things that makes Austin Austin. About two years ago the mural made big news as it was in danger of being torn down and the community fought to save it. Even then I still didn’t pay attention to what the big deal was.

Well, it turns out there is quite a story behind the art and guy who painted it. Daniel Johnston is an artist and musician who struggled with mental illness most of his life. His obsession with self-documenting his life through tape recordings, super-8 films, as well as his drawings and music provided a fascinating and inspiring look into his world.
